Travel to Detroit
If you are arriving by car, please know that the hotel offers parking onsite, at $25 per day. Valet parking is $35 a day. There are also a number of nearby parking lots, with varying prices. Check Park Whizz, Park Rite, and others. Just search “parking near Book Cadillac, Detroit”.
If you are flying into Detroit Metropolitan airport, you will be about twenty miles from the hotel. The hotel does not have a shuttle. Some options are (one way):
Shuttlefinder shows a car with driver that can take 3 passengers for $106;
estimated taxi fare is $50;
Lyft runs $25-$49 depending upon the size of the vehicle;
Uber estimates the cost at $23.
There are other options available, too.
At the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, check-in time is 4 pm.
What to Pack
When you are packing, please consider bringing:
Casual clothing. This is acceptable for the event. Plan on layers, as hotel temperatures may vary.
Your own tote bag for conference materials
A gift card or two for the community outreach project supporting schools and shelters for women and children - these will be collected in a box by the registration area
Swimsuit and exercise clothing if that’s your thing
Checkbook, money, cards for shopping at the Society Expo
Walking shoes if you wish to tour the area on foot
Passport or other ID for travel to Canada if you choose
Westin Book Cadillac Hotel
This beautiful hotel was originally built in 1924 and was recently restored to “the opulence of the era”. The Book Cadillac is a luxurious hotel centrally located to many places to visit.
The facility has a beautiful indoor pool, so pack a swimsuit. There is a fitness center as well. To help with questions and planning, there is concierge desk service in the lobby. Each guest room has a mini-fridge, hairdryer, coffee/tea maker, and iron and ironing board.
The hotel has several restaurants, although we hope you have signed up for the conference meals.
It will be a delightful stay!
Visit Canada!
While at the conference, you will be very close to the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel to Canada, so consider bringing your passport or enhanced driver’s license or NEXUS card for the border crossing. Windsor, Ontario, is only a short drive from the hotel and offers many things to do and see!
What to Do In Detroit
There is so much to see and do in this city! You may visit the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Detroit Historical Museum. There is the Fisher Building, Motown Museum, the original Ford auto plant, Pewabic Pottery, and Eastern Market. Explore the riverfront area with The Spirit of Detroit, Hart Plaza, The Fist, and so much more!
Check out the casinos (three!), Greektown, Old Mariner’s Church, The Renaissance Center, Belle Isle and the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center. There is truly something for everyone!
